Stephen McLaughlin signed for Southend United permanently in the summer of 2015 after helping the club achieve promotion in a loan spell in 2014/15.

While on loan at Roots Hall from Nottingham Forest, McLaughlin scored a crucial goal in the play-off semi-final second leg against Stevenage.

Born in Donegal, Stephen began his career in English football after joining Forest from Derry City in 2013.

He would total just nine games in two years for the Reds and spent time away from the City Ground with the likes of Bristol City and Notts County.

Impressing during his loan at Southend, the Irishman penned a permanent three-year contract in the summer of 2015 for an undisclosed fee.

McLaughlin scored once in 18 appearances in Blues’ first season back in Sky Bet League One.

The midfielder surpassed that tally within the first month of 2016/17, scoring 3 goals in the opening four games, and went onto tally eight goals despite a three-month injury lay-off.

In the summer of 2017, McLaughlin signed a new long-term contract to tie him down at the club for the next three years.
