Bio
Debut:
Born in Pontefract, West Yorkshire, Palmer began his career with Scunthorpe United before spells at Hinckley United, Droylsden, and Buxton.
Ash Palmer joined the Shrimpers in October 2026 on loan from York City until January 2027 after racking up nearly 250 appearances in the National League with 18 goals to his name.
The central defender is also a three-time National League title-winner, having won promotion from the fifth tier with Stockport County and Chesterfield, as well as the Minstermen.
After earning Buxton’s Player of the Year award in 2014/15, the defender made the switch to National League North outfit North Ferriby United, establishing himself as a key figure in the Villagers’ promotion-winning squad via the play-offs – winning the club’s Player of the Year once again.
Two seasons in the National League with Guiseley followed before completing a switch to Stockport County, where he earned another promotion having featured prominently during the Hatters’ National League North title-winning campaign.
Back in the fifth tier, Palmer continued to be a mainstay of the County defence right through to their return to the EFL. He made 40 appearances and scored three goals as Stockport accumulated 94 points to win the division and earn promotion to League Two.
In November 2022, he returned to the National League to bolster Chesterfield’s fight for promotion. The Spireites won each Palmer’s first four games at the club, punctuated by the defender netting the only goal in a 1-0 win against Altrincham. He started all but four matches across the remainder of the campaign, playing all 240 minutes of Chesterfield’s play-off run that ended with a 6-5 penalty shootout defeat at Wembley Stadium.
Palmer then played an integral role in the Spireites’ 2023/24 National League title triumph alongside fellow Shrimpers Darren Oldaker, Ryan Colclough, and Vontae Daley-Campbell.
After playing 17 times for Chesterfield in League Two – including both legs of their defeat to Walsall in the Play-Off Semi-Finals – Palmer moved on to York City, where he featured six times before ending the season on loan at FC Halifax Town, where he played every minute of the last 10 matches of the 2025/26 campaign.
