Southend United Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former player Neil Campbell.

Aged just 45, Neil sadly passed away over the weekend.

He scored three goals in 26 games for Blues during a short spell between 1999 and 2000 and will be remembered fondly for his brace in a 3-0 win away at Leyton Orient.

Blues Head Coach and former teammate of Neil, Kevin Maher, said: "It really shocked me when I found out. It’s just so sad and 45 is no age at all.

"He was a great lad in the changing room. He got on with everyone and my thoughts are with his family right now."

Campbell began his career at York and went on to also play for Doncaster, Scarborough and Barrow.

Everyone at Southend United would like to send their sincerest condolences to Neil’s family and friends at this terribly sad time.

Before kick-off today against Weymouth we will observe a minute’s applause to remember Neil.

Rest in peace, Neil Campbell
