Southend United are delighted to announce the signing of Wes Fonguck on a two-year deal, with a club option for a third year.

The 25-year-old midfielder makes the move from Barnet for an undisclosed fee.

Born in south east London, Fonguck joined the Bees in 2014 and made his debut two years later against Crawley Town in a League Two fixture.

He’s since gone on to play over 150 games for the north London club and previously also represented England C in September 2018, as he became an ever-present in the Barnet side making 42 appearances and scoring eight goals that year.

"He’s someone who can link the midfield to the attack," said Head Coach Kevin Maher on his new arrival.

"He’s comfortable on the ball, moves well and can travel with the ball so I think he will provide something different to the midfield area, and he can play in a wider area at times as well.

"He’s someone we’ve known about for a long time, we watched him a lot and kept an eye on his situation and when the opportunity came about we moved quickly to get the deal done.

"He’s played a lot of games and he’s at an age where we think he can get better. He has good energy and adds a good dynamic to the middle of the pitch which will provide good competition for places.”

On joining, Wes said: "I obviously spoke to Harry [Taylor] and asked how he’s finding things, he had good things to say about the club. That played a part in me joining.

"I also played under Darren [Currie] before and that makes things easier. I know his ideas and how he likes to play and the gaffer too sounded very similar, so there was really no reason for me to hesitate.

"I’m more attacking minded, I can play midfield, in the number 10, even out wide on the left. I’m a technical player and like to make things happen, dribbling, passing, just creating things on the pitch. When you’re in the midfield you have to do a bit of everything!"

Wes takes the number 18 shirt. You can sponsor him this season by contacting our commercial department on or calling 01703 304147.

Welcome to the club, Wes!
