Southend United are absolutely devastated to hear about the passing of local journalist Rowland Lyons.

A hugely enthusiastic football reporter at the Yellow Advertiser, Rowland was a popular visitor to the Roots Hall press box during the season, travelling from his home in Somerset.

Indeed, it was only on Saturday when he made that exact trip to report on our friendly against Gillingham.

A Leyton Orient supporter, Rowland also covered the O’s, Colchester United and Essex County Cricket Club. Rowland loved reporting on the matches and ensured Yellow Sports teams received fair and honest coverage.

He was a unique and eccentric character; kind, chatty and always polite.

Those that knew him will remember him for his legendary Southend/Orient/Leeds homemade scarf (pictured) and his notorious fluorescent yellow jacket. But above all he will be remembered as one of the good guys.

Rest in peace, Rowland.
