Southend United continued to build their pre-season fitness as they romped to a 7-0 victory over Canvey Island at Park Lane this evening.
Callum Powell netted a second half hat-trick, while summer signing Dan Mooney bagged a brace in the first half, alongside goals from Trialist A and Trialist B, to fire Blues to consecutive convincing victories and clean sheets.
Blues exerted their quality in the first half, summer signing Mooney opened the scoring with a fantastic left-footed curling effort after neat combination play with Jack Bridge.
Canvey, who were promoted from the Isthmian North last season, threatened a response from a free-kick but the attacker headed narrowly wide.
And it was Blues who were next to strike, hitting the Gulls with a double blow, netting two goals in three minutes.
In the 31st minute, Mooney sweetly struck a wide free-kick which was fumbled by the Canvey ‘keeper, and Trialist A was on hand to sweep home from inches out.
Shortly after, Mooney grabbed his second and Southend’s third goal with a fine solo effort.
The 23-year-old, who also scored in Blues’ 4-0 victory over King’s Langley on Saturday, carried the ball into the Gulls’ penalty area before dispatching a well-placed effort with his weaker right foot.
Maher’s side continued to push in the second half but were met by a firmer resistance.
Mooney was denied his hat-trick from the penalty spot on the hour mark after Bridge was fouled when through on goal.
As his team return to full fitness, Maher made nine substitutions soon after, and it took just six minutes for the newly-introduced Powell to add to the visitors’ tally.
The 26-year-old raced through before being brought down to earn Blues yet another penalty, this time successfully converted by Powell, furthering the comfortable cushion.
The former Kettering Town forward grabbed his second eight minutes from time with a fine finish, after evading challenges from the Canvey backline.
In a late flurry of Blues goals, Trialist B struck a fierce effort in at the near post just a minute later to stretch the away side’s lead to six, before Jack Wood was fouled in the box to award Maher’s side their third penalty of the evening.
Powell duly dispatched as Southend’s 10 substitutions dominated the remainder of the match.
