Head Coach Kevin Maher is expecting a step up in test for his players when they travel to Kettering Town in pre-season this weekend.

The friendly was arranged as part of the deal involving Callum Powell’s transfer to Blues earlier in the year.

And Maher says it will be another level up from who they’ve faced so far.

"It steps up from Canvey on Tuesday night, and it will step up again the next three or four games as we go on," said Maher.

"It’s a good test and obviously Powelly going back will be nice for him. He did brilliantly for Kettering so I’m sure he’ll get a good reception which he should do.

"[It’s] A good test and we’ll look at who needs minutes and what team will go out but whoever does it will be a tough game for us."

The Blues boss will be able to call upon Gus Scott-Morriss and Sam Dalby after they were rested on Tuesday, but Louis Lomas remains a doubt.

"Gus and Dalbs didn’t play [against Canvey] but they trained on Thursday which is important.

"For the sake of missing one game, or some minutes in that, for the risk of what might occur, a couple of days rest has done them good. Fingers crossed they’ll be available for the weekend."

The coaches took the players away from the training pitch on Thursday for a team building exercise at The P.T Barn, and Maher says there is a great morale in the squad.

"The lads that we’ve brought in are all of a good age and they are all desperate to play for the club.

"With them integrating with the lads already here there has been some good early signs, but we won’t get too carried away.

"There’s still a little bit to go, but they’ve all got involved and there’s a decent bit of banter around the place which is hopefully a good sign."
