We’re delighted to announce Will Atkinson has signed a contract extension.
The midfielder has been in great form for Kevin Maher’s side.
Since re-joining the club in August, Atkinson has played 15 games in all competitions.
And following the expiry of his current deal on Monday, the 33-year-old has now signed an extension to keep him at Roots Hall until the end of the season.
Maher said: "He’s a great character and a great person. His work ethic is good around the place and when he goes on the pitch you know what you’re going to get.
"Working hard is a talent and Will has got that in abundance.
"He’s a breath of fresh air and just talks about playing all the time.
"I’m delighted to have him on board and he’s been really important for us.
"Age is just a number when you’re as fit as Will is. He’s non-stop and him and Nealy have done ever so well in midfield so we’re looking for more of the same."
Atkinson said: "I’ve been at the club before and I’ve been here this season and it’s been a bit of a tough place to be at times this year, but I feel like it’s starting to turn now.
"I want to be a part of it moving forward so I’m really pleased to be staying.
"I don’t know if I’m back to my best, but I’ve definitely had a run of games and I feel like we’ve got a system that is working.
"The manager has implemented his style and it takes a bit of time, but I think it’s all coming together and hopefully we can keep that going.
"There’s no point in getting carried away or anything. We want to be a lot higher up and although it’s a lot better than we were doing, there’s still for improvement.
"I’m getting a run in the team so I’m getting fitter all the time. I’m looking forward to another game tomorrow which we’ll be looking to get another three points in."
Congratulations, Will!
