REMEMBER THAT 1975/76 FA CUP RUN?

11 February 2022

Working with the Southend United Ex Players Association (SUEPA), we’ve lined up something quite special for our match versus Grimsby Town on Friday February 18th.

The 1975/76 season proved to be a difficult one in the league, but in the FA Cup things were very different.

Four home ties in a row saw us dispatch Swansea, Dover, Brighton and Cardiff in some enthralling encounters. Stuart Parker helped himself to five goals along the way, including a sensational injury time winner versus Cardiff (pictured above).

Many in the near 13,000 crowd in that fourth-round match stayed behind after the final whistle to hear the draw for the next round relayed over the tannoy, leading to further scenes of delirium as we drew reigning Division One champions Derby County.

At least 10,000 Shrimpers made the trip up to the Baseball Ground where a narrow defeat put paid to our Wembley dreams, and many who were there will recall we had an ‘equaliser’ cruelly ruled out for offside!

However, the journey had been memorable, and some 46 years on for our next match at Roots Hall SUEPA are re-uniting three of that team.

Dave Worthington, Andy Ford and Kenny Foggo will be our guests for the evening, and none of them have met each other since they left us so it should be quite emotional. Dave had to miss the Derby match due to suspension, but some of you might recall that he was on the pitch before kick-off sporting a fedora as made fashionable at the time by Malcolm Allison!

As a further bonus, the three are also due to be joined in the Legends Lounge that evening by Shrimpers stalwart Spencer Prior who is over from his home in Australia for a long-awaited trip back to the UK.

There will no doubt be lots of stories from this great group of former players.

There is still some availability in the Legends Lounge, but places are selling fast so to be sure of your place get in touch with the Commercial Team by calling 01702 304136 or head to the website as soon as possible and book online.
