In conjunction with the Southend United Ex Players Association (SUEPA), we are looking forward to welcoming back to Roots Hall four players from our 1975/76 FA Cup run to the fifth round where the Shrimpers gallantly lost narrowly to the then Division One champions Derby County.
Dave Worthington, Andy Ford and Kenny Foggo, who had been due to be our guests back in February for the Friday night fixture v Grimsby Town (which had to be postponed due to storm damage), will be coming along and this time will also be joined by former Shrimpers centre-half Tony Hadley.
The run to Round Five back in the 1975/76 season was memorable for many reasons, with us playing at home in the first four rounds including a dramatic last minute winner v Cardiff City to earn us the trip to Derby. A reported 10,000 Shrimpers made their way up the M1, but with Dave Worthington suspended and Neil Townsend injured, Tony Hadley (and Steve Dyer) were drafted into the defence alongside Andy Ford and Alan Moody. We came so close to taking the champions back to Roots Hall – Kenny Foggo on Saturday will no doubt tell everyone that his ‘goal’ should never have been disallowed!
It will be the first time back to Roots Hall for over 40 years for three of our returning Shrimpers, and we hope you will all give them a great welcome back on Saturday.
