ONES TO WATCH - GRIMSBY TOWN (A)

19 November 2021

In what is a bit of a rarity these days, Blues are in action on a Friday night away at Grimsby Town later on hoping to return to winning ways.

The Mariners were relegated alongside Blues last season, and we have picked out three players from the Blundell Park outfit who could cause a threat to Kevin Maher’s side.

John McAtee

Grimsby’s main threat is arguably John McAtee. The former Scunthorpe man joined the Mariners in the summer and has so far scored six goals in 12 starts. However, McAtee picked up a knee injury and has not featured since a 2-0 win vs Yeovil, with the Cleethorpes-based side losing every game since. Local media have reported the influential striker is back on the training pitch, though Friday’s game could be too soon for him to feature.

James McKeown

Goals have been hard to come by so far this season for Blues, with the Essex side failing to score in eight games so far. One man who will look to continue that record is Grimsby ‘keeper James McKeown. The 32-year-old has been with the Mariners since 2011 and has featured in over 500 games in that time. This season, McKeown has six clean sheets, the third highest in the league.

Will Bapaga

The young 19-year-old is currently on loan from Championship side Coventry City and has featured in nine games so far this season. Bapaga is the fifth-youngest player to make their senior debut for the Sky Blues and has been tipped for the top by former coaches. With two goals to his name, the youngster did not feature in the Mariners’ 2-1 defeat to Aldershot last week and so could look set for a return to the side.
