Five talking points ahead of this weekend’s Vanaram National League clash at Roots Hall between Southend and Woking.
Woking are the only Vanarama National League side yet to draw a game this season. The Cards have won six and lost seven of their 13 games and find themselves slap bang in the middle of the table. Manager Alan Dowson will know a win could be enough to put them within four points off the play-offs, with a game in hand.
A Famous Coach
Martin Tyler is a name famous within football for his voice, not coaching ability. However, the legendary commentator has been a lifetime Woking fan and joined the Cards as Assistant Manager in 2018. In his debut season, he helped the club achieve promotion to the National League and reach the Third Round of the Emirates FA Cup.
Back-to-back home wins?
Blues will be looking to get successive home wins in the league for the first time in 11 months. Having just won 4-1 vs Dover Athletic, Maher and his team will be hoping a second home win in as many games could leapfrog the club up the table.
Southend will be up against former loanee Jamar Loza this weekend, who had two different spells with the club. Currently in his third spell with Woking, the Jamaican international will be hoping to get on the scoresheet at Roots Hall one more time (though in different colours).
We Meet Again
It will be Woking’s first visit to Roots Hall, however it’s not the first time the two clubs have met. Meeting in the First Round of the FA Cup in 1997, Alvin Martin’s Southend went to giant killers Woking as underdogs. Yet it was the Essex side who run out winners with late goals from Nathan Jones and Phil Gridelet on the scoresheet to set up a tie at Fulham in the next round.
