Blues manager Phil Brown has provided an update on developments concerning transfer talks, stating the club are moving forward with targets.
Brown enthused at the calibre of players he and director of football Ricky Duncan are in talks with.
He said: "I’m really excited. I’ve been talking to a number of players that are ready to put pen to paper, and we’ve just got to make the right decisions.
"We’ve got existing players at the football club that are close to putting pen to paper.
"Players really getting to the stage where they are putting their case forward, and I would be telling lies if I wasn’t excited at the prospect of signing some of these players. But we’ve got to make sure that we get the right ones.
"We’re moving forward on all fronts. Whether that be existing players at the club that are close to signing or players that are out there that we have identified and would like to bring into the football club.
"We’re very close to a number of signings, but I don’t want to build the supporters up too much because you can fall flat on your face.
"But I am genuinely excited at the quality of the players that we’re talking to."
Brown, who agreed to become permanent Southend manager earlier this month, also feels there is a change in mentality at the club to get business done early.
"I’ve noticed a marked difference at the club in the way I’ve dealt with it before, in the previous regime, when I was here for five years and the mentality of the Chairman now.
"The mentality of the Chairman now is to get these deals done as quickly as we possibly can and between myself and Ricky Duncan, I can see progress in the way we’re thinking about things and piecing the jigsaw together to try and put a good strong squad in place that is going to challenge for honours next season.
"It’s not going to be easy, there’s no doubt about it.
"I’m not painting a rosy picture and saying we’re going to walk it. I’m painting the picture that we’re ready for action right now and I’m hoping that we will have 75/80 per cent of our squad ready for the 8th July when we come back for the six week grind of pre-season."
