In a recent match day programme for the match against Bolton, the usual Southend United Ex Players Association (SUEPA) feature focused on SUEPA’s oldest (Jackie Bridge, 89 in May) and youngest (Charlie Kelman, 19) members.

However, ’SUEPA Corner’ also featured Peter Heathcote (89 in November) who is the SUEPA member to have played for us the longest time ago. Keeper Peter made his bow for Southend away at Watford in October 1951, making his home debut on 19 January 1952 against Millwall.

Peter joined us as a junior but with chances in goal limited he moved on to Gravesend & Northfleet at the start of the 1953/54 season.

The programme includes a great photograph of Peter celebrating a junior cup final win with his then Leicester School teammates back in 1946 (pictured above with Peter in the dark blue jersey), and after Peter’s family got in touch recently via the SUEPA Facebook page we arranged for a copy of the Bolton programme to be sent to him and it is great to see him looking so well.

The matchday programme is always a great read and includes articles written by both the club and the fans, so why not get your copy for each match?
