Southend United’s pre-season schedule began with a 2-0 victory over Great Wakering Rovers tonight.
Phil Brown’s side scored either side of the half time interval with Jason Demetriou and Trialist D on target, as Blues ran out comfortable winners at Burroughs Park.
Blues side dominated early proceedings, with Trialist B forcing Tim Brown into routine saves on the 12th and 13th minute from long-range strikes.
Great Wakering came close to opening the scoring as Jake Gordon received the ball in Blues’ box and laid it off to Billy Harris, but Jason Demetriou made an exceptional challenge to keep the scores level.
Trialist B continued to be a thorn in Rovers’ side and that became apparent when he won Blues a penalty, Perry Dunn committing the foul.
Jason Demetriou stepped up and calmly dispatched the spot kick into the bottom left corner to put Blues 1-0 up.
On the 23rd minute, Trialist A looked to add to the lead as he picked up possession just inside his own half and charged through Rovers’ defence. His strike went high from an acute angle.
Blues were reduced to half chances after that. Terrell Egbri showed great skill to wriggle into Rovers’ box and flashed a great ball across the face of goal, but the home side managed to clear the danger.
Egbri again troubled Rovers as he worked his way into space and shot from long-range, but Brown saved comfortably.
Demetriou rounded off the action for the first half, hitting a 30-yard strike narrowly wide of Brown’s goal.
As is standard procedure for early pre-season, Southend made 10 changes at half time, all were outfield as Harry Seaden remained in goal.
Three minutes after the interval, Blues doubled their lead. Trialist D rose highest after goalmouth scramble to delicately head home the visitors’ second. Brown made a terrific double save in the lead-up, but he could not keep the Trialist from heading home from close range.
A rather less eventful period of play followed, but Charlie Sayers threatened the home side in the 67th minute with his strike going over from a tight angle.
Charlie Morris responded for Rovers in the 73rd minute as his strike from the edge of the Southend penalty area went narrowly wide.
In the closing stages of the game, Blues went close on the 78th minute as Louis Walsh showed great skill to get past his man and crossed to Trialist E, who connected with the ball in but could only direct it to the palms of goalkeeper Brown.
Our thanks to Great Wakering Rovers for hosting us and we wish them luck for the season ahead!
