BLUES BEAT HARLOW IN BEHIND CLOSED DOORS FRIENDLY

More on today's 2-0 win against Harlow Town...

24 July 2021

Rhys Murphy was on target for Blues with a well-taken effort as Southend United beat Harlow Town 2-0 in a behind-closed-doors friendly on Saturday afternoon.

Murphy was a second half substitute for Blues in the match at Boots & Laces Training Ground as he continued to build his fitness following half an hour on Friday night against West Ham United.

A trialist had given Phil Brown’s side the lead in the first half from the spot following good work from Jack Bridge to skip past the defender and win the penalty.

And Phil Brown was pleased with Murphy’s substitute appearance in the friendly and to see him get on the scoresheet.

"Rhys is the type of player that has an invention about his game, he lights the place up and everybody wants to play with him,” said the Blues boss.

"Rushy comes alive when Rhys is on the ball and Deon Moore did in the second half today. He’s one of those players that is exciting to work with. I’m hoping for more because the intricate play in the final third was not to the standard we want by any stretch of the imagination but we will get there.”

On the second game for his side in as many days, Brown added: "I was happy with Harlow coming down because, like Great Wakering, they raise their game and like we did for 30 minutes against West Ham last night.

"We’ve come through it unscathed and I got a good spell out of Bridgey which was key with him having not played a part on Friday night.

"In terms of minutes under the belt there’s a big bunch of players up to 65/70 minutes now which is good news.

"I’m always concerned about fitness levels and we’ve just done two week's work. Are we fit enough to go into the season? The answer is no but we will be come the 21 August.

"We just have to improve fitness-wise, we have to get better and there's a lot more to come."
