Blues’ trip to Vale Park ended in a disappointing 5-1 defeat to Port Vale.
The hosts opened the scoring inside the first minute with Devante Rodney striking a half-volley into the top corner.
After taking the lead the Valiants were forced into making their first change, with Adam Crooks replacing the injured Shaun Brisley.
Moments later David Worrall came back to haunt Blues with a deflected shot that bounced over the diving Mark Oxley to make it two-nil.
Southend were forced into a change with captain John White coming off for Ashley Nathaniel-George, which also meant a change in the formation.
But the change didn’t help Blues as Port Vale bagged their third goal on the 27th minute. The goal came following a corner that wasn’t cleared properly, with the Valiants regathering possession and sending a ball into the box that bounced around the inside of the box leaving Crooks open to slot the ball into the net from close range.
Tom Clifford was introduced into the game following an injury to Sam Hart, and moments later Oxley was tested from close range and saved a powerful shot with the underside of his arm.
Vale’s fourth goal came from a quick counter-attack which was started by James Gibbons who made it to the edge of the box before laying off the ball to Rodney who rounded the keeper and passed the ball into the open goal.
Blues’ latest signing Nathan Ferguson was brought on at half-time to help the team get back into the game.
Winger Nathaniel-George had Southend’s first attempt at goal but his curling effort went sailing over the bar.
Mark Molesley’s side kept pushing forward and tried to break the Valiant’s defense but couldn’t find an opening until the later stages of the game.
A slight positive point from the encounter at Vale Park saw debutant Ferguson score from 25-yards out, smashing the ball into the top right corner, but his effort came too late into the second half to mount any kind of come back.
The final goal of the game was scored by Manny Oyeleke who kept hold of the ball on the edge of the six-yard box and slotted the ball down the inside of the advancing Oxley.
Defeat on the road means Blues stay at the bottom of the league table, ahead of a home game against Walsall next weekend.
