Southend United are delighted to announce Will Atkinson has signed a short term deal with the club until the end of January initially.

Atkinson, 32, returns for a second spell at Roots Hall having previously made 173 appearances for Blues in four years.

Adding a vast amount of experience with over 350 Football League appearances, Phil Brown is pleased to have recruited the midfielder.

"Will’s pathway seems to have got lost," said Brown. "When he left us he went to a club that were offering a better contract and to move back up north, so I understood the reason why but he’s sort of lost his way where his career is concerned.

"For a player of his calibre not to have a club even at non-league level, I thought it was a great opportunity for us."

Brown added: "He’s got a point to prove. His opening line to me was one that got my attention.

"He said I’m not going to cost you the world but I’ll be your best player, and he’s proved that in training that his fitness levels are still up there, his desire to get around the park are still up there, but unfortunately he got injured in pre-season and I refuse to take an injured player, so he’s had to go through his rehabilitation.

"He’s adding a lot of energy and a lot of experience, he’s got quality and he also gives us an option out on the wing.

"I think he will be one of the key components in midfield when we’re running over teams.

"I’m absolutely delighted and I want to thank the Chairman for putting his hand in his pocket when we’re pushing the borders of the budgets out."

The former Hull, Bradford, Mansfield and Port Vale midfielder could be involved in Saturday’s first home league game against Stockport County.

"I’m delighted to get it over the line,” Atkinson said. "I’ve been here since the start of pre-season now. I picked up a little niggly calf injury, but I’m delighted to sign and I’m looking forward to it.

"I know the club well. I was here for four years and enjoyed every moment that I was here.

"I know the manager, I know the assistant Craig [Fagan] as well, so hopefully we can have a good year together.

"I’m looking to help in anyway I can. Experience is just another way of saying you’re old, but I still feel fit and I am experienced so hopefully I can use that alongside my other qualities.

"I love the buzz around the place, being back with the boys. It was a great result on Saturday, a really positive start so hopefully we can do the business this weekend and keep the momentum going."

Welcome back, Will!
