Charles Breakspear will referee Southend United’s Sky Bet League Two game at home to Morecambe on Saturday (3pm kick-off).
The Shrimps visit Roots Hall where they have a favourable record, winning four of their previous five trips to Essex and drawing the other.
Breakspear, who last took charge of a Blues game back in February as Elvis Bwomono scored a 90th minute winner against Lincoln City, has replaced the originally assigned referee for the game which was Sam Allison. As a result, the matchday programmes will state Allison as the referee with the change coming after the print deadline.
His other two Southend games last season were the 2-2 draw at home to Rotherham and the 1-0 defeat against Accrington Stanley, which saw Nathan Ralph given his marching orders for two yellow cards.
Surrey-based Breakspear is now into his eighth season as an EFL referee.
His season has got off to an eventful start, with two red cards shown in his opening four games, including one in a highly charged 0-0 draw beaten Portsmouth and Shrewsbury on the opening day of the season which saw seven yellow cards shown.
Last weekend he was referee in Stevenage’s 3-0 win over Oldham Athletic.
Breakspear will be assisted by Matthew Lee, Geoffrey Russell and Fourth Official Stephen Brown for the game.
