Jon Benton said there was some relief mixed in with joy when he received the news he would be offered his first professional contract.
The midfielder has missed a lot of time out through injury over the past couple of seasons, twice fracturing his foot.
On top of that, the coronavirus pandemic has brought a lot of uncertainty.
So he was thrilled to receive the news over the weekend he had been offered a contract and now sees this as the chance to really kick on.
"It seemed quite unreal at first and then as you read through the letter, it was just like a massive relief with everything that’s going on,” he said.
"To know everything I’ve put in, and the same for the other boys as well, to get this far has paid off.
"It’s a stepping stone but I’m over the moon and was so happy when it came through."
Benton had a brief spell out on loan at Great Wakering this season where he made a good impact before fracturing his foot the second time.
And just as he was able to join in full training again the pandemic put everything on hold, so he’s had to bide his time once again.
But he’s fully fit now and is raring to kick on from his injury setbacks.
"It had been a bit of a struggle with the injury but I knew I had come back from it once so I could do it again," he added.
"The week before we broke up due to this coronavirus was the first week I came back into full training.
"But now I’m feeling as fit as I’ve ever been, so I’m heading in the right direction.
"This is almost like a mini injury because we’re stuck at home and can’t do too much. Like everyone I’m just working hard to maintain my fitness and waiting to hear when we’ll be back in.
"I feel good, feel strong and feel fit so I’m looking forward to hitting the ground running, pushing on and getting back playing again."
