On youngsters coming into the first team…

"It’s great for the fans and for their futures, but long term it’s not sustainable really. I know you want them [the young players] to play free but also they’ve got to start being responsible as well.

"This is their development, they have to keep going and not go off the boil and disappear for five or six games, this is what it’s all about. Next game, we have to go again and keep your head screwed on and feet on the ground.

"This is the moment they have to really focus and knuckle down on their football, be consistent. That’s the key with young players, being consistent."

On being strong defensively against a top of the table side…

"We have lost since players since we played them last, but players have come in and done well.

"They’ve had a steady side, don’t underestimate that. Having a steady side week in week out, or roughly, is very good. We’ve had to chop and change.

"The goal we conceded last week showed a little bit of naivety at the back, but we’ll get better. As long as we learn from them kind of mistakes and go again that’s what it’s all about.

"We take positives but it’s going to be a tough game. The guys are ready to compete and hopefully we take our chances when they arise, and we’ll get something from the game."

On any fresh injury concerns or if anyone will return

"No, I don't think so."

Timothee Dieng

"Tim has been out there but he’s still another week or 10 days away."

Mark Milligan

"Milligan will be out there but he will need a mask so we need to consider if it’s worth him for the weekend or maybe the following week because he needs a mask and will then need time to adjust. He wants to play but we’ve got to weight it up."

John White

"He can train because it’s his arm but he’s still out. Hopefully he can get back before the end of the season."

Stephen Humphrys

"He’s had his operation and is due back in this weekend.

"Everyone heals at a different speed so let’s see how he is on the weekend and see what happens after that.

"I think he’s obviously a little bit tentative because of all the injuries he had previously around the nasal area, so we need to be careful and make sure it’s nice and healed properly before he goes back out there and concentrate on football, not thinking about his face."

Rotherham boss, Paul Warne...

"After winning against Bristol Rovers last time out, Southend will have confidence and they have a youthful exuberance. They can come here fearless, and I don't mean this disrespectfully, but when you're at the bottom end of the league and you go away to someone at the top anything is a bonus.

"They’re a decent footballing side so they'll enjoy playing on our pitch, so it will be a tough game. I don't think there are any teams who will just turn up and get their bellies tickled, we have to find ways to break them down."
