The Shrimpers and Imps Connection

29 January 2020

On Saturday 1st February in another matchday event organised by the Southend United Ex Players Association (SUEPA) we welcome back our former midfielder Mark Hone.

Mark played for us during our 1990’s Championship years, making 56 appearances in two seasons before making a free transfer to Lincoln City. He then clocked up a further 50-plus appearances for the Imps.

We are also hoping on the day to catch up with our former manager Steve Thompson who managed us for a brief spell at the end of the 1994/95 season, as we expect him to be at Roots Hall in his role as co-commentator for BBC Lincs on Lincoln City matches. Steve also both played for and managed the Imps.

Like us, Lincoln City have a thriving ex-players association and SUEPA are in regular contact with them exchanging news and views as well as networking to contact former players. It was this connection that led to our former early 1970’s midfielder Dennis Booth joining SUEPA.

With our match day opponents on Saturday having quite a few former Shrimpers in their current squad there are some strong commonalities between the two clubs both past and present.
