Preview: Campbell ahead of Accrington

16 January 2020

Blues boss Sol Campbell previews the long trip up to Lancashire to face Accrington Stanley this weekend.

John Coleman's side were on the end of a 4-1 defeat at the hands of promotion chasing Ipswich Town last weekend.

Blues come into the game on the back of three consecutive draws, while it's also four in the last five that have ended with the points shared.

Here's the thoughts of Campbell on the clash...

On trying to maintain the unbeaten run this calendar year…

“We’re on the right track but we just need a little bit more belief in front of goal, but we are getting the chances.

“They’re falling to all sorts of players, we just need to convert and hopefully one of these games they all go in for us.”

On the positive affect keeping a clean sheet last time out had…

“Well it has to really!

“For the defenders, for the goalkeeper, for the team as well. It was over a year at home since we last kept a clean sheet.

“We just need a little bit more composure in front of goal, but we are getting the chances.

“We’ve just got to add to it with some goals and get a little bit of luck as well, but you need to impose yourself and force the issue to earn that luck.

“We are working hard, the lads are putting a great shift in, so if we keep doing that then something has got to drop for us sooner or later.”

On needing to show resolve…

“The lads have started to show some character, coming back from a goal down [against AFC Wimbledon for example], they've done really well.

“The character is definitely building in all the players so that's a really good thing for me to see.

“We need characters all over the pitch from now until the end of the season.”

On Accrington…

“We’ve got to set our stall out and make sure we deal with their threats but also we’ve got to make sure we play our football and take our chances.

“We’ve been playing really good. Last week was a solid performance but we just need a bit of luck in front of goal.

“We are getting in key positions, we just need a push to get us over the line.

“It’s the final hurdle and that bit more belief that when we get in the positions we are going to score.

On how to get that…

“Well when you’ve had so many games not scoring freely and things like that, it takes a little bit away from your game, that’s normal.

“We’re trying to put that back in, we are making them feel that they can score or get a ricochet off a goalkeeper, or believing they will be in the right place at the right time to knock it in for the team. That’s what you’ve got to believe, if you stop believing then there’s not worth you turning up.

On the team news…

“There’s no other concerns. The usual niggles here or there but every club has got that.”

On the transfer market…

“We’re trying hard to get bodies in, it’s always difficult but we are trying.”
