Big Preview: Southend United vs Lincoln City

31 January 2020

Southend United vs Lincoln City...

Overview

Blues return to Roots Hall tomorrow afternoon looking to bounce back from the midweek defeat to Doncaster Rovers as they welcome Lincoln City to Essex.

The Imps will be bringing with them a number of familiar faces to Southend fans with Cian Bolger, Jack Payne, Ben Coker and the recently acquired Tom Hopper on their books.

But Sol Campbell’s side will hope it won’t be a happy return for the returning former-Blues as Southend look to pick up their first home league win of the season.

Form

Tuesday night’s 3-1 defeat at Doncaster Rovers ended Southend’s unbeaten start to the new year whilst also ending Blues’ four-game unbeaten run which dated back to Boxing Day.

Prior to the loss at the Keepmoat Stadium, Blues had won one and drawn three of their last six matches with a win against Accrington following draws against Tranmere, Wimbledon and MK Dons.

Lincoln also lost midweek, losing 2-0 at home to Portsmouth, which meant it was back-to-back defeats for The Imps who’ve won two and drawn one of their last six outings.

Lincoln City 4-0 Southend United

Shackell 31’, Toffolo 40’, Walker (p)48’, Andrade 81’

Southend United were soundly beaten by Lincoln City at Sincil Bank as The Imps inflicted a 4-0 defeat on Blues in this early season clash.

Jason Shackell headed Lincoln in front before Harry Toffolo doubled their lead before the break. Tyler Walker’s penalty after the restart made it three with Bruno Andrade rounding things off.

Blues Team News

Stephen Humphrys took a whack to the face on Tuesday night and had to be substituted and is currently waiting on the results of an x-ray to see if the striker has broken his nose.

Sam Mantom and Jason Demetriou also limped off against Doncaster in midweek and are fighting to return to full fitness ahead of Saturday.

Timothee Dieng though is definitely out as he continues to recover from a hamstring problem with Sol Campbell confirming the game has come “three of four days” early for the Frenchman.

Lincoln Danger Man

He’s a face that will be all too familiar to Southend fans, as Tom Hopper makes his first return to Roots Hall since joining The Imps a fortnight ago, and he’ll be one to watch tomorrow.

Following the departure of Tyler Walker – Lincoln’s top scorer, who returned to his parent club Nottingham Forest – more pressure is now on the likes of Hopper to fill the void in front of goal.

Before being struck down by injury, ‘Hopps’ scored seven goals in 14 appearances for Blues last season and he’ll be looking to get off the mark tomorrow against his former employer.

Ref Watch

Charles Breakspear makes his third visit to Roots Hall this season as he takes charge on Saturday, being assisted by Stephen Brown and Daniel Cook, with Carl Fitch-Jackson the fourth official.

Breakspear last took charge of Blues’ 2-2 draw against Rotherham before Christmas, having previously overseen Southend’s 1-0 defeat to Accrington back in September.

This season so far, Breakspear has issued 105 yellows and 12 red cards across his 24 games in charge, and last time out he officiated MK Dons’ 2-1 win at home to Rochdale.
