Southend United are delighted to announce the signing of goalkeeper Patrik Gunnarsson on a week emergency loan deal from Championship side Brentford.
The 19-year-old 6ft 2in shot-stopper was promoted to the Bees’ first-team squad in September having signed for Brentford B in 2018.
The Icelandic progressed through the Breidablik Academy in his homeland, experiencing second division football with Reykjavik Athletic (IR), before a move to England.
After playing mainly for Brentford's B Team in his first season, Gunnarsson made his debut as a substitute for former Blues goalkeeper Dan Bentley against Middlesbrough last year.
Injury to Mark Oxley last weekend had left Sol Campbell’s side with 18-year-old’s Harry Seaden and Callum Taylor as the only available goalkeepers.
Gunnarsson will be available for this weekend’s game against Burton Albion, subject to FA clearance.
