Reaction: Molesley on second pre-season outing

22 August 2020

Southend picked up their second win of pre-season this afternoon as they beat Isthmian North side Hullbridge Sports 3-0 at Boots and Laces.

First-half goals from Miles Mitchell-Nelson and Brandon Goodship set Blues on their way before Stephen Humphrys grabbed Southend’s third and his third of pre-season late in the second half.

And following the full-time whistle at Blues’ training ground, manager Mark Molesley gave us his thoughts on the game as well as updating us on his squad.

On the game…

It was quite blustery conditions today which made it a little more difficult and added to the challenge. That is what we want, we want challenges out there, we want to make it tough. The opposition made it a real competitive game which is great, and I think we got a lot out of it.

I think everyone stood out. We’re looking at the team as a whole at the moment. I think we are displaying the right things and trying to do the right things. At the moment we’re pleased, but there’s always room for improvement and we’ll be seeking to do that every day. It’s just looking at ways we can improve ourselves and the team every training session.

On keeping back-to-back clean sheets…

You look for positives out of everything we do, but we’re not going to get carried away with anything so far. It’s very early days and we’ve got a lot of hard work ahead of us, but what I can say is the attitude and the application has been first class from the boys.

On Jordan Green’s first appearance…

It’s quite evident what sort of player he is as soon as you see him: he’s very explosive, very quick, quick on the regains, similar to Terrell Egbri on the other side. It was a good workout for us, we’re getting plenty out of it. The boys will rest up tomorrow and be ready for a tough week.

On Timothee Dieng and Sam Barratt…

[Dieng being left out was] just a slight precaution. We’re at the stage where we’re not going to push anyone unless we have to. Tim trained yesterday and was a little bit tight today, so we didn’t take any risk.

Sam has left the club now and we wish him well in his future.
