Southend United’s pre-season schedule of games will begin this week with two behind closed doors friendlies.
Blues will then follow it up with two more behind closed doors games next week leading up to the Carabao Cup Round One tie on Saturday 5th September.
Specific details of the games won't be advertised but speaking to southendunited.co.uk boss Mark Molesley has given an insight into what lies ahead for the squad as the players prepare for the big kick-off.
"We’ve got some behind closed doors friendlies lined up before we go into the Carabao Cup and the EFL Trophy and then we’re into the league so it’s happening really quickly,” he said.
"Part of our training on Saturday was an intra-squad game, that was already pencilled in and that was great.
"We had a bit of training and then into an 11 v 11 and it was great to see people in their positions and on a full-size pitch.
"The first two days [I've had with the players] the attitude was excellent but as I’ve said before, that’s the minimum I expect.
"Each training session we’re really trying to build upon day by day and look for small improvements.”
With this being a pre-season like no other, there's a lot to get into a short space of time.
Molesley knows how important it is to get the players up to speed quickly but cautiously.
"We have to be really careful now, we need to put the building blocks in.
"It’s not a usual pre-season. Usually you’d have six or seven weeks and six or seven friendlies but that’s not the case.
"We need to try and make quick gains but we need to make sure everyone ticks the right boxes in terms of getting the right backlog of work behind them because we don’t want any problems, so we’re trying to build the lads up for the rigours ahead. We need to be careful and balanced with that.”
Southendunited.co.uk will provide a report and reaction to all the behind closed doors games at full-time.
