Blues picked up their second win of pre-season as they beat Hullbridge Sports 3-0 thanks to goals from Miles-Mitchell Nelson, Brandon Goodship and Stephen Humphrys at Boots and Laces.
Mark Molesly named a young starting 11 for the game against the Isthmian North side and Southend went close to opening the scoring inside four minutes at a windy training ground.
Smart link-up play down the left allowed Tom Clifford to break through but the full-back failed to get the best of connections with his effort and shot wide.
Blues went close again seconds later when a cross from Rob Howard, this time from the right, picked out Jason Demetriou, with his prodded effort needing to be tipped wide by ‘keeper Jason Greene.
Greene was called into action again moments later as a low corner found its way to Brandon Goodship whose shot had to be tipped away once more by the Hullbridge stopper.
It wasn’t all Southend though as the visitors hit the crossbar with a cross that almost caught Harry Seaden out before Kieran Bishop's rebounded effort was cleared off the line by Miles Mitchell-Nelson.
And having saved a certain goal up one end, Mitchell-Nelson would go and score up the other end as he broke the deadlock 20 minutes in, scoring from a short corner routine.
A set-piece from the Blues right was played out to Lewis Gard whose first-time cross found the run of Mitchell-Nelson perfectly to head beyond Greene and put Southend in front.
Blues would go on to double their advantage before the break when Trialist broke the offside trap to get goal-side, fizzing in a low cross that was smashed in by Goodship.
Molesley made wholesale changes on the hour mark with 10 new outfield players taking to the pitch, including on-loan signing Jordan Green who was making his first appearance in Blues colours.
And the Barnsley loanee would make an immediate impact as he won a penalty to give Southend a chance to extend their lead, only for Stephen Humphrys to see his effort from the spot saved.
Humphrys though would make amends and grab his third goal of pre-season when Charlie Kelman slipped his strike-partner through before calmly dinking the ball beyond Greene to score.
The Southend striker went close to making it a brace just moments later when his miss-hit volley bounced up and onto the crossbar as it finished 3-0 to the hosts.
