Match Report: Great Wakering 0-4 Southend United

Blues begin pre-season with convincing win

18 August 2020

Mark Molesley’s tenure as Blues boss began with a 4-0 victory against Great Wakering Rovers in Southend’s first pre-season game ahead of the 2020/21 season.

Blues came flying out of the blocks in the first-half and opened the scoring inside the opening five minutes with Stephen Humphrys scoring from the penalty spot.

Humphrys picked off a loose pass to run through, but after his first effort was blocked, Danny Hurford brought down the striker who then sent Tim Brown the wrong way from 12-yards.

The Southend striker was looking sharp in front of goal and saw another low effort gathered at the second attempt by Brown, before going on to double Blues’ lead moments later.

Idemudia Udebhu-Osimeh’s long ball over the top found Isaac Hutchinson out on the right with the winger’s cross-shot providing the easiest of tap-ins for Humphrys at the far post.

Southend continued to have the better of the chances with Elvis Bwomono seeing a shot go just wide before Humphrys almost set up Hutchinson with a low ball across goal that was out of reach.

Molesley made 11 changes at half-time as the rest of the squad got their chance to impress and Charlie Kelman thought he’d grabbed Southend a third only for the offside flag to rule his effort out.

Matt Rush then forced a smart save out of Brown after shifting the ball onto his right-foot before seeing his low shot parried away by the Wakering stopper.

Southend would eventually find their way through for a third time after Brandon Goodship charged down Brown’s clearance, allowing Eren Kinali to drill home from just inside the area.

Molesley’s side had chances for more goals late on with Kinali stinging the palms of Brown and Kelman flicking a Goodship cross just over the crossbar.

But Blues would round off the scoring in the same way they started it, from the penalty spot, as Rush was brought down in the box with Jason Demetriou sliding in Southend’s fourth of the evening.
