Blues boss Mark Molesley was delighted with the character his side showed to overturn a two goal deficit and come out on top against Charlton Athletic on Tuesday afternoon.
Following the game, here’s what Molesley told southendunited.co.uk…
On his reaction to the win…
"It was a great workout for us which is what you need in pre-season.
"I think it exposed a few things which is what we want to do. We’ve got to open everything up and look at ways we can improve, and then there was a big shift in the game in the second half where we managed to come out on top and score some goals.
"We got lots out the game. It’s pre-season, it’s building blocks and we’re seeking ways of improvement all the time.
"There’s plenty of areas we can still improve but there were plenty of positives to come out the game as well.”
On the character shown to come from behind…
"We’re trying to create strong characters, resilient characters and we’ve certainly showed that today against fantastic opposition.
"Blustery conditions probably reflected in the scoreline, defending that wind was quite difficult, but we managed to flip the game in the second-half and seize the initiative.
"[There’s] plenty of positives but we’re certainly not getting carried away.
"There’s a lot for them to take on board at the moment so we’re throwing a lot at them and sometimes there’s going to be things that don’t go as well as a result of a lot of changes, but ultimately this is a long-term project and we’re trying to put strong foundations in at the moment.
"It’s early days and there’s lots of room for improvement but we’re on the right lines just over 10 days in."
On Harry Lennon getting 30 minutes…
"That’s a real positive out of today, the return of Harry Lennon to get 30 match minutes under him.
"He’s worked hard in the last week, he’s just bringing up his training now so to get 30 minutes, that’s big tick in the box for that and a real positive today because he’s going to be a big player for us.”
