Cox: "We have to sense danger a bit better"

18 September 2019

Simon Cox scored his first goal of the season on Tuesday, but ultimately it didn’t count for anything for Southend who suffered a 4-3 defeat at the hands of Shrewsbury Town.

Read what Cox had to say following the defeat and on his goal itself.

On problems defensively at the moment…

We scored three goals away from home for the second time this year and come away with no points, so we have to look at that. That’s not the defenders, it’s from the forwards backwards, every single one of us.

We all have to do so much better as a unit, we’ve got to defend a lot better than that. We shouldn’t be scoring three goals away from home and not coming away with anything, we should have at least come away with a point.

Sometimes you can’t legislate for individual errors but at the end of the day we have to try and help a team mate out. You look at Elvis’s one where he gave the ball away - can we try and help him out some way. We have to sense danger a bit better and the third one we should just bring him down and take a clever booking.

We have to be a bit more streetwise, smarter and it’s got to mean a lot more to us. The boys in there are not happy at all because we look at ourselves as a competitive team in this division and at the minute, we’re shipping too many goals. We’re scoring a few but from our point of view it’s got to change, and it’s got to start Thursday.

We have to put a plan into place for MK Dons and hopefully come out with something.

On if there is belief that they can put things right…

We have players in there that can do things that I’ve not seen from a long time and I’ve been in dressing rooms where they haven’t got as much talent in there than what we have. At the minute we’re just frustrating ourselves and everybody around us, it’s just not clicking for whatever reason. We just have to do all the horrible nitty gritty stuff that should be a given but at the minute it’s just not happening for us.

On getting off the mark this season…

It’s always nice to get off the mark and the sooner it comes the better because you start doubting yourself. I scored one goal from outside the box last year and now I’ve started with one this year. It’s nice but I’d rather I didn’t score, and we got the three points.
