Big Preview: MK Dons vs Southend United

20 September 2019

MK Dons vs Southend United...

Overview

Southend are back on the road again tomorrow afternoon for some more League One action as they travel to Milton Keynes to take on the MK Dons at Stadium MK.

These two sides met less than a month ago in the Carabao Cup as the Dons put four past Southend at Roots Hall to advance to the third round, earning themselves a home tie against Liverpool.

And with the visit of the European Champions looming on the horizon, Gary Waddock’s Blues will have to be wary as the Dons players look to impress ahead of next Wednesday's match.

Form

Blues finally got themselves off the mark in the league last weekend as they picked up a point in an entertaining 3-3 draw at home to Fleetwood Town.

Unfortunately for Southend though they weren’t able to build on that result in midweek as they fell to a 4-3 reversal on the road against Shrewsbury.

MK Dons too were defeated in midweek, losing out 1-0 to high-flying Ipswich Town, and they’ve stared the league with four wins and four defeats from their opening eight matches.

Last Meeting

Tuesday 27th August 2019

Southend United 1-4 MK Dons

Goodship 54’; Healey 35’, Brittain 41’, Boateng 82’, Nombe 90’

The last meeting between these two should still be fresh in the memory, although Blues fans would rather forget it as MK Dons dumped Southend out of the Carabao Cup.

Goals from Rhys Healey and Callum Brittain put Dons in control. Brandon Goodship’s first for the club gave Blues hope, but strikes from Hiram Boateng and Sam Nombe ensured MK advanced.

Blues Team News

Blues will have been boosted by the returns of Mark Milligan and John White to training this week as the two continue their recoveries from hamstring and ankle injuries respectively.

Milligan has been missing since going on international duty with Australia at the start of September while White has been out since injuring himself in the defeat to Rochdale three weeks ago.

No fresh injury concerns were reported on Tuesday, while Simon Cox and Stephen Humphrys will look to continue their blossoming strike partnership after scoring four between them in the last two.

MK Dons Dangerman

Youngster Sam Nombe is arguably the one to keep an eye out for tomorrow afternoon with the striker currently leading the goalscoring charts for the Dons with four goals in all competitions.

One of those four came in the Carabao Cup win over Blues last month, finishing expertly across the face of goal after getting on the end of a backheel into the box from Hiram Boateng.

Nombe’s goalscoring exploits are currently seeing him keep the normally prolific Kieran Agard out of the Dons side, so he must be doing something right, and he’ll need close attention tomorrow.

Ref Watch

Antony Coggins will be the man in the middle at Stadium MK, being assisted by Marvyn Amphlett and Lisa Rashid with Mike Desborough sitting in as fourth official.

Coggins has taken charge of six games thus far in the 2019/20 season, showing 16 yellow cards without brandishing a single red card as of yet.

Last time Coggins took charge of Blues was back in December 2018 for Southend’s 3-0 win over Accrington Stanley at Roots Hall.
