Southend were unfortunate not to come away with all three points under the lights at Tranmere Rovers as Blues drew 1-1 at Prenton Park last night.

Tom Hopper marked his first start in almost a year with a superbly taken goal only for the points to be shared following a Paul Mullin penalty late on.

Following the full-time whistle, Caretaker boss Gary Waddock gave his thoughts on the evening to the press and he was full of praise for the performance his Blues side put in.

On the point on the road…

It should have been more. We played extremely well and had a number of chances to kill the game off, and I thought it was a really good away performance.

We had good chances. Timothee Dieng had a glorious chance as well and I think that was floating around in his head for about 10 minutes during the course of the game, but the lads gave everything tonight.

I thought it was a great away performance and I thought our supporters were magnificent travelling the distance that they’ve travelled tonight and they were very vocal. This place is vocal anyway but they gave a good account of themselves.

On Hopper’s scoring return…

I’m absolutely thrilled for Hopps to mark his return like that with a goal of that quality.

It was a good move and the finish was of real quality, so I was really pleased for him but I’m also pleased for the whole group of players. They showed what they were about tonight.

On having to shuffle the pack…

It hasn’t been easy, full stop. Mark Milligan’s been halfway around the world; Mark Oxley was missing with his situation too, but I thought Joe Shaughnessy next to [Milligan] gave us a real solid foundation to tonight’s performance.

Everyone to a man tonight gave a really good account of themselves and the group have that take that forward. They showed what level they can get to. This isn’t an easy place to come to so that’s the marker now, they have to push on from here.

[Doncaster] is another difficult outfit that you’re coming up against but if we get anywhere near that performance on Tuesday evening, we’ll give ourselves a chance in the game and that’s all we’re looking for. The performances are vital and we gave a performance tonight.
