On Saturday v AFC Wimbledon in another event organised by the Southend United Ex-Players Association (SUEPA) we have two former players as our guests for the day who were schoolboy friends, team mates in the same Shrimper squad and now, aged 68, remain great friends and still see each other every week.
Dave Barnett was a central defender who first came to Roots Hall as an apprentice in July 1968 and made his debut away at Darlington on 5 May 1969. He was part of our 1971/72 Division Four promotion season, and over five seasons made a total of 66 appearances for us.
His friend Ken Reynolds was part of our 1970/71 squad and is pictured with Dave in the team picture shown here for that season (Ken is first right in the middle row, Dave being three places to his right). Ken did not make a first team appearance for us, instead playing in what was then a very competitive Midweek League reserve team.
Together with Peter Hunt (front row far right), Dave and Ken look to get a couple of games of golf in every week – a friendship forged in a Blue shirt which is still going strong nearly 50 years later!
Do be sure to give Dave and Ken a great Roots Hall welcome on Saturday.
