Blues had another night to forget in League One last night as they suffered a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Portsmouth at Fratton Park.
John Marquis opened the scoring right on half-time with a contentious Ellie Harrison goal just after the interval doubling the home side’s lead.
Brandon Goodship got one back but a second from Harrison and one from Marcus Harness secured the win for Pompey, and following the defeat, Sol Campbell gave us his thoughts on the evening.
On the defeat…
We’ve kept them at bay and we’ve done really well, then in the last 30 seconds [of the first-half] we’ve let them send a simple curling ball in and we’ve not gone with our runner and they’ve got off and got their goal.
Then we go 2-0 down and we get back in the game with a great shot, then we let ourselves down with another pen – it’s hard.
We’ve had a tough three games – Ipswich, then Sunderland away and then Portsmouth away – all three sides have pedigree in the Premiership and have got quadruple budgets than us, so we’re not expected to win those games but we could've got something out of them.
That’s how it is sometimes when you’re down at the bottom, you just don’t get the rub of the green. When you’re down there, you’re not getting that kind of luck, but we have to keep working. These are the games that we’re not expected to win but it’s the other games where we’ve got to pick up points.
On troubles defensively…
For us, we’ve just given the goals away. They’ve not carved us open, scored top corners, it’s really come down to basic errors that we’ve got to iron out.
As a team, if you get fitter, you get stronger and make better decisions. We’re working hard on the field, we’re trying to get the guys fitter step by step but it’s very hard when you’re playing games and you’re trying to get the guys fit, and you’re trying to implement your style of play.
They’re responding really well, they’re working really hard and I can’t fault that, they’ve put everything in. We’ve had two tough away games; these games are not easy and we just have to regroup and go again.
On the positives…
I think Brandon Goodship scored a good goal and had another chance; he could have put us 1-0 up. The main thing is we’ve started getting shots now, we’ve just got to iron out the silly little mistakes and clear our lines.
Sometimes it’s all about just a good clearance, get out and start again. What we’ve got to get is our basics right in certain scenarios and not allow the red mist to cloud our judgement, and that’ll come once we get fitter and stronger. The clock’s ticking, we’ve got to start picking up points.
