The 2018/19 season began with a narrow defeat at home to Doncaster Rovers and a score draw away to Plymouth Argyle...
The opening month of the season was very up and down for Southend United, after the trip to Plymouth, Blues faced Brentford at Roots Hall for the First Round of the Carabao Cup but after putting up a good fight the Championship side ended up 4-2 winners and went through to the next round.
The next match saw Southend return to League One football as Bradford City travelled down South, in this game Blues picked up their first three points of the season courtesy of goals from Tom Hopper and Simon Cox.
After the win at home a trip to Luton Town was next on the cards, which didn’t end as well as the previous game. This match finished as a two-nil defeat just three days after the home win.
Blues' last game of August ended with our first away win of the season as we beat Bristol Rovers 1-0 thanks to Tom Hopper's effort, the result ended meant that Southend had won at the Memorial Stadium for the first time in the league since 2002.
Summer signing Tom Hopper ended the month being the clubs top goal scorer with three goals to his name in five games.
In the following month of September, it began with a home match against the Addicks on the 1st September, Southend suffered a narrow defeat to the hands of Charlton Athletic courtesy of an 87th-minute winner from Charlton’s loanee Krystian Bielik.
The next game for Blues was a Checkatrade Trophy match against Cambridge United, Southend cruised past the League Two side to win the game 3-1 with two goals from Shawn McCoulsky and a rapid debut goal from Isaac Hutchinson, which saw the Academy youngster score just 52 seconds after being subbed on.
A third home game in the space of a week saw Peterborough visit Roots Hall which ended up seeing Posh run out 3-2 winners. A trip to Shrewsbury Town a week later also saw Blues on the wrong side of a two-nil scoreline.
Southend did finish the month strongly though with a one-nil win at home to Fleetwood Town courtesy of a Simon Cox effort in the 53rd minute. The final game of September was a trip to Wycombe Wanderers. This would be the first time the two sides had met since the infamous League Two Play-Off Final back in 2015 and the tension in the air leading up to the game could have been cut with a knife. Blues were 3-0 up after 60 minutes and looked set to cruise into a comfortable win over the Chairboys, but a late comeback from Gareth Ainsworth's side almost saw Southend drop two points. However, they held on strong and recorded a 3-2 win over Wycombe to end the month on a high.
At the end of September Blues were 13th in the Sky Bet League One table after 10 games played and a total of 13 points.
