It was with enormous sadness that the club and the Shrimpers Trust learned of the passing of Sid Broomfield over the weekend at the age of 94.
Sid was only 30 when he was handed the task of building a new stadium for Southend United.
As project leader he and a small band of workers handcrafted every concrete step, laid every brick and structure you see at today’s stadium.
He was awarded a testimonial match in 1974 for his services to the club and continued to be seen at Roots Hall on a regular basis into his 90’s.
A spokesperson for the Shrimpers Trust said: “It's not often anyone other than a player would be afforded the title of Legend - but Sid was indeed that.”
Southend United has lost a legendary figure and along with the Shrimpers Trust we send our heartfelt sympathies to Sid’s family at this time.
