ON SATURDAY WE WELCOME BACK A MAN WHO GAVE US A SPECIAL MEMORY

14 March 2019

On Saturday, in conjunction with the Southend United Ex Players Association (SUEPA), we are looking forward to the visit of Peter Daley (‘Scouse’)...

Scroll back to 16 April 1989. With the Blues gunning for promotion and Colchester United trying desperately to stave off relegation, the away end at Layer Road was packed with the Blues faithful hoping that we could make it back to Division Three at the first attempt.

One-up thanks to an Ian Benjamin strike and with the game getting more and more frantic, on comes Scouse as sub, and soon afterwards he is smashing the ball in the net to spark off jubilant scenes. It was a treasured moment for the young man who had joined us from a North West Counties League team, and he was also played his part in the final game of the season at Peterborough when we secured promotion. His one season with us came to an end after that game at London Road, but what a season it was, and one he can look back on proudly as having played his part in creating some special memories.

We are sure Scouse will get a great reception at Roots Hall on Saturday.
