Looking back at Sam Mantom's 2018/19 season...

Snapshot of his season

Sam Mantom joined Blues permanently ahead of the 2018/19 season and quickly became captain, taking over from Mark Oxley.

Playing most of the season in centre midfield, but occasionally switching to the right side of a diamond at times in the latter stages of the campaign, the 27-year-old played 3,751 minutes in the league, which was the highest in the squad.

Mantom’s first assist came in a 3-0 victory over Walsall on the 23rd October. He had to wait until 27th November for his first goal of the 18/19 League One campaign which came against his old club Scunthorpe United, however he did net seven days prior to that against Crawley Town in the Emirates FA Cup First Round Replay which ended in a 6-2 victory AET.

On the 15th December, Mantom was on the scoresheet again, this time it was in a 3-0 win at home to Accrington Stanley. From August all the way to the end of December the former Walsall man only missed one league game, playing and starting in all the other league matches.

Mantom’s next goal came in the first game of 2019, in a 2-0 win over Gillingham at Roots Hall and on 19th January he scored with a brilliant strike from outside the penalty area, his sixth goal in all competitions in a 4-0 away win against Bradford City.

His delivery from set-pieces was crucial against Blackpool as he set up both goals in the 2-2 draw at Bloomfield Road, firstly for Rob Kiernan and then Michael Turner.

On the 22nd April the Blues had an important home clash vs Burton Albion which ended up finishing 3-2 in favour of Southend with Mantom scoring one which would then be his last goal of the season, he would then finish up on seven goals in all competitions and with four assists.

Stand out game

One of Sam Mantom’s stand out performances came in a season-defining game at Roots Hall. This was when Burton Albion travelled on the 22nd April and Southend knew it was a must-win game. Mantom’s overall performance was full-blooded and committed from minute one, while he also broke the deadlock in the 18th minute from Simon Cox’s cross. It was a real captain’s performance from the 27-year-old who played a big part in a huge win.
