We can confirm that Kevin Maher has left his position as U23 Manager at Southend United to join Bristol Rovers.
A stalwart as a player making 455 appearances during a successful career in which he captained the club to successive promotions, Maher has helped the development of our Academy players which of late has seen the likes of Nathan Bishop, Dru Yearwood, Elvis Bwomono, Isaac Hutchinson and Charlie Kelman transition into the first team.
The 42-year-old now teams up with former assistant manager Graham Coughlan as the Pirates’ first team coach, and Academy Manager Ricky Duncan wished Maher well in his next step.
"I am sorry to see Kevin leave his position with us within the Academy as he has been a part of the under 23 set up from the start and has worked hard to establish it and see players progress into our first team,” said Duncan.
"After talking to him in the summer he came to the decision that he wanted to move into the first team environment and it was best for him at this time to progress.
"I and all in the Academy wish Kevin every success in the future and thank him for the work he did while here."
We are now in the process of interviewing candidates for the U23 Manager position and will make an announcement on Maher’s replacement in due course.
