First-Team coach Svetoslav Todorov was pleased with the workout Blues got in their final pre-season game ahead of what he described as a “massive week” with the new season just over a week away.
Southend ended their set of warm-up matches ahead of the new campaign with a 1-1 draw against Gillingham with Isaac Hutchinson’s goal cancelled out by Mikael Mandron’s header.
And after the game, ‘Toddy’ spoke to the press to give his view on the game while looking ahead to next weekend’s League One opener against Coventry City.
On the Gills draw…
The boys worked really hard and everyone played really well, and we ended up with a good result.
We had two games, against Millwall and today, against good teams and the boys did really well, and we expected that as well.
It was good that Gillingham put a good side out against us as they have another game tomorrow as well and the boys did really well, and everybody showed good qualities on the day.
On mixing the team up…
Some of the boys played 90 minutes [on Wednesday] and we couldn’t afford to play them again because we needed to keep them away from getting injuries.
The boys who had not played Wednesday, they got their chance today to show us what they can do against a team from our league.
On Blues’ pressing game…
We’re working on that on the training ground and we’re working on quite a lot of things tactically.
We try to improve everyone and I think the boys have shown, against Millwall and today, what we’re working on and that they’re enjoying it.
The main thing is that they do that on the pitch when we play the proper games. It’s a massive week and it’s all starting next week, and everyone is looking forward to the beginning of the season.
