Southend United take on Billericay Town tonight in the Quarter Final of the Essex Senior Cup...
Kevin Maher’s side have battled past Harlow Town and Waltham Abbey to get this far in the county competition and they will be looking to progress even further, but they will have to knock out the current holders of the cup to do just that.
Blues had failed to get through the first stage of the competition in their last seven attempts, but a dramatic 5-2 win over Harlow saw them progress into the Fourth Round for the first time since 2011.
Southend battled back after Tom Hitchcock and JJ Da Cruz had put the hosts in front to record a resounding 5-2 triumph. Norman Wabo bagged a brace whilst Isaac Hutchinson, Harry Phillips and substitute Eren Kinali each bagged a goal to gift Blues the win.
A tough tie against Waltham Abbey saw Maher’s youthful side once again go 2-0 down before half-time. Once again though the U23’s picked up the pace and managed to pull the game back in their favour to win 5-2.
Isaac Hutchinson netted four second-half goals and Amadou Ba netted the final goal to get on the scoresheet as the U23’s defeated the Abbott’s to reach the Quarter Final.
Tonight’s QF cup match will be a testing one for Maher’s U23’s side due to the number of new additions the hosts have made this window and also down to the fact that the last time the two sides met, Billericay thrashed Blues 7-3.
So tonight’s game is sure to be filled with plenty of action as Southend head to the AGP Arena to take on Dean Brennan's side.
