One year ago today the Southend United Ex Players Association (SUEPA) was formed by the Shrimpers Trust, and the last 12 months has seen them go from strength to strength with a continually growing membership and a number of ex player reunion events already held...

The aim of SUEPA is simple – to re-unite ex-players (and coaching staff) with each other, the club and the fans, and in doing so create new memories for all. The latest to join was Martin Carruthers, with us from 1999 to 2001, who became SUEPA’s 170th member.

SUEPA’s membership spans the decades from the 1950’s with ex-Shrimpers who took part in the first ever match at Roots Hall like Dickie Dowsett, right up to the recent past and still playing the game like Ryan Leonard. However, a significant number were with the club at the time of one of Roots Hall’s most memorable nights.

Today marks the 40th anniversary of our third round FA Cup tie against Liverpool when we held the then European Cup champions to a 0-0 draw. Manager back then was Dave Smith and he, together with nine of the team that snowy day back in 1979, are members of SUEPA.

The three players who have yet to be found are Mickey Stead, Steve Yates and Phil Dudley. SUEPA would love to make it a ‘full set’ and if you have any leads as to their whereabouts do please get in touch with SUEPA by emailing them at

Some of the team from that Liverpool match have been back at Roots Hall in recent times at SUEPA events and it would be great one day to see more of them back here once more – SUEPA are working on it!
