The number 10 has won the supporter’s vote for the Genting Casino Player of the Month award for his exceptional display in the second month of the year!
Cox started February with a goal against Bristol Rovers, his effort wasn’t enough to spur on a comeback for Blues but the goal brought his tally in the league into double figures.
Next was an away game against Charlton, a tough place to go in recent years for Southend, but the experienced forward was able to provide the assist to Stephen Humphrys’ opening goal and he played a pivotal role in earning a point on the road.
A defeat to Doncaster the following Tuesday was a night to forget and Chris Powell wanted his side to show a reaction at home to Portsmouth.
The Pompey game was a big one, not just because of the rivalry between the two sides but also because the game was being broadcasted LIVE on Sky Sports. After 31 minutes the game looked set to end in the favour of Portsmouth with the visitors being 3-0 up at this point, but non-other than Simon Cox stepped up to the plate and pulled one back before half-time which entirely changed the dynamics of the game.
Fast-forward into the closing 15 minutes of the game and Michael Kightly won Blues a penalty, which Cox tucked away calmly to make it 3-2. Just as the game seemed to be all but over Cox and Timothee Dieng popped up with a moment of magic and as Roots Hall stood still, Dieng produced a blind pass to the advancing Cox who curled home a superb equaliser making the whole stadium erupted into mass celebration. Rightfully the man of the moment was awarded the Man of the Match award and rounded off the perfect come-back against the promotion-chasing Pompey.
The month ended with a 1-1 draw against Accrington, but everyone will remember February for that exceptional display at Roots Hall which saw Cox bag his first Southend hat-trick.
