On Saturday we see the return of former shot-stopper Mel Capleton as the latest guest of the Southend United Ex-Players Association (SUEPA).
Mel started his football career at Roots Hall before moving on to Blackpool where he made his professional debut.
Via Billericay and Orient, he then returned to Southend in October 1998 playing just once before then returning for a third time the following March when he became our established ‘Number One’.
Mel then made 60 appearances in a Southend shirt before, after a spell with Grays, deciding to retire after suffering a broken leg.
However, the then Billericay manager, the late Justin Edinburgh, persuaded Mel to put his boots back on which he did for a year before stopping again, only to then be tempted back into playing again for Canvey!
Now aged 46, Mel is the co-founder and director of Open Air Fit who deliver sports coaching, fitness training, and sports-related activities on Wandsworth and Clapham Commons in South-West London.
We are delighted to welcome Mel back for our match against Rotherham, be sure to give him a great welcome when he gets introduced on the pitch shortly before kick-off.
