Southend United showed great character to record a 2-2 draw against play-off chasing Rotherham United at Roots Hall this afternoon.

Blues went behind after Rob Kiernan’s unfortunate own goal before equalising through Jason Demetriou’s penalty shortly after the restart.

The home side then went in front when Sam Mantom scored only for former Blues striker Freddie Ladapo to level and ensure a share of the points.

Following the full-time whistle, Sol Campbell gave the press his thoughts on the draw against the Millers as Southend continue to show signs of improvement in their performances.

On showing character…

Considering where Rotherham are and where we are, it’s a good point. We’ve had a lot of chances to come away with a win, we just needed to have a bit more belief and we would have bagged at least a couple more goals.

When a goal like [Kiernan’s own goal] goes in, it’s a little bit deflating. You say to yourself: what else could go wrong? They didn’t really threaten us other than that.

We defended well, we looked after their front guys because we didn’t want them to have too much space in front, especially on their free-kicks and set-plays, and then we’re not concentrating and we go 1-0 down.

The main thing is we got in, dusted ourselves off and we showed some character. We had to, especially at the end as they had a lot of set-plays, corners and things like that and we had to have our wits about us.

On building confidence…

Hopefully, the more games that we get through, the guys can start getting a little bit of confidence, but we do need to eradicate those little mistakes here and there. If someone has to score, they’ve got to score a worldie, not a goal that’s self-inflicted which we seem to fall into week in week out.

We went 1-0 down, then were 2-1 up and they got their goal again because we’re not awake in the box, anticipating that final touch, and we’ve got to get better at that as individuals and as a team.

Hopefully, the guys will take this game on and think yes, we created a lot of chances but we just need to connect and stick a couple of them away, and we could easily have four goals in the end. It doesn’t always work out like that in football, you’ve got to work for every single point.

On having something to build on…

We’ve got to have some momentum. Today the performance was really good and the lads played really well against a difficult Rotherham side and we’ve had a lot of chances.

I’ve just looked back at the video and we’ve had a lot of chances, we just need to be a bit sharper in the box here and there, and that’ll come the more we train and the more we get used to each other.

As a team, we’ve just to keep it going and believe, we’ve got to believe. First-half, I felt happy and there was a little bit of pride there cause the guys came back and showed great character.
