Sol Campbell’s wait for a league win as Southend manager continues after Blues squandered a 2-0 lead to lose 4-2 against Bristol Rovers at the Memorial Stadium
Goals from Tom Hopper and Brandon Goodship had given Blues a deserved two-goal lead at the break before Rovers began their turnaround with a Jonson Clarke-Harris penalty.
Abu Ogogo brought the two sides level before Ed Upson’s half-volley and Alfie Kilgour’s header completed the comeback, and Campbell didn’t hold back in his post-match reaction.
On a disappointing second-half…
Considering that we had a fantastic first-half, I made sure to say to the guys the game’s not done and you’ve got to keep doing the same things, and then it all goes out the window.
Players not getting back in position, not busting a gut to do the same things. All we had to do was the same things, get back in position and do things early.
They want to do what they want sometimes and not get back in, and when you start doing that with a team that’s mid-table, of course there’s going to be a reaction, but maybe some of the players thought the game was done.
On where it went wrong…
As individuals and as a team, we’ve got to recognise that you’ve got to be fighting for every inch of the pitch and you’ve got to be in position. I can understand after 80 minutes maybe being out of position here or there, but not a couple of seconds into the second-half.
Of course there’s going to be a reaction. They’re going to try and get a goal; they’re not just going to lay down and die, so get back in position and obviously we don’t want to do that for some reason. We don’t want to get into position, we don’t want to go in where it hurts and we don’t want to keep on running. I can understand after 85 minutes, but not just after half-time. I’m not having it.
I’m disappointed because they let it go. They had an amazing first-half and just chuck it out the window. We might as well have just lost 4-0. We could have gone on and won that game, but we stopped doing the right things from the second-half.
We can’t expect to win games when you’re 2-0 up and you think the game’s done. We’re human beings, what kind of world are you living in?
On moving on from today…
We’ve just got to keep on going but we’ve got to look at ourselves and look at why we’re not wanting to move five yards into position.
Do you not think they’re going to want to go again and try and score? I don’t really know what world these guys are living in now. We’re at the bottom of the league, we’re 2-0 up and we stopped all the things that got us up to 2-0 and we let it go.
I don’t understand if it’s fear, or they think something bad is going to happen. We can’t be in this position, how good are we playing? It can’t be happening…it is happening!
