Whilst the vast majority making the trip from South Essex to Kent for Southend United’s away game this season with Gillingham FC will travel to the game by coach, car or train, a small group of supporters joined by Southend United’s Head of Commercial are taking a different option.
On the early hours of Saturday 5th October nine Shrimpers Trust members together with Southend United's Head of Commercial Rhys Ellingham will be putting on their walking boots to trek the 33.4 miles from Roots Hall Stadium to Southend's away game with League 1 rivals Gillingham FC at the Priestfield Stadium ME7, Kent.
Setting off at the ridiculous hour of 11pm on Friday 4th October the team will be walking through the night raising funds for the Trust and Little Havens Hospice.
“Journey to the Gills” will be formally launched at the forthcoming home game vs Rochdale, when the team making the trek will be joined pitchside by community fundraiser Sally Bridger together with her colleagues from Little Havens.
The “Journey to the Gills” team want to enlist the help of the whole Southend United community so as to make this initiative a huge success. Any sponsorship pledge anyone can make no matter how small will be greatly appreciated, with monies raised by the event being split 50/50 between the Trust and Little Havens Hospice.
In addition, work is already underway to enlist the backing of local businesses with many already having pledged their support.
In the run-up to the walk, all the team will have sponsorship forms available and will be urging their fellow supporters to pledge a donation.
