Southend are delighted to announce the signing of experienced defender Liam Ridgewell.
Ridgewell began his senior career with Aston Villa, spending a spell on loan at Bournemouth in 2002, before moving to Villa's local rivals Birmingham City in 2007.
He won the League Cup with Birmingham in 2011 before departing after 175 appearances for West Brom in 2012.
The former England U21 international moved to MLS side Portland Timbers in 2014 where he went onto win the 2015 MLS Cup.
In January he joined Championship side Hull for the remainder of the season, but now joins Blues on a one-year deal which includes the club option of a futher year.
“I’m really pleased to have joined the club and looking forward to getting started," said Ridgewell.
“I had a discussion with the gaffer, we spoke at length, and I hope with the experience that I can bring to the team we can have a successful season.
“I’ve played a number of games throughout my career and one thing I can try and do is help people and guide them and hopefully in turn that will help me have a good season.
“A big conversation I had with the manager was he wants to win and wants to do well. I wouldn’t have come here if he didn’t want to do that and the club didn’t want to do that. I’m looking to try and help us make sure we win games and make sure that we have a good season and come out with our heads held high.
“It was tough last season but hopefully that will stand us in good stead this year and it will strive people on to make sure that doesn’t happen again.”
Blues boss Kevin Bond is convinced Ridgewell will be a success at Blues.
“He’s been top drawer as a professional, the way he’s conducted himself, looks after himself, played at the top level,” said Bond.
“He wants to win, will be demanding and I’m absolutely thrilled to have him with us.
“To be honest I didn’t think we would be able to get him, but we have.
“He’s got fantastic experience which is really important for the position he plays.
“He’s still driven, he’s in fantastic condition and I’m so pleased to have such a good professional on board.”
Bond also revealed it’s unlikely that Ridgewell will be available for the trip to St Andrew's to face Coventry on Saturday.
