Kevin Bond's Rochdale preview

26 April 2019

Southend manager Kevin Bond previews our penultimate game of the season away to Rochdale.

On a great win and it being a happy camp this week…

You could tell directly after the game that there was a huge sense of relief and joy of getting the three points and I think there was a really good display from the team as well so that was very positive.

On a lot of hard work going into the performance and needing the same again on Saturday…

We certainly are, we’ve got two cup finals coming up next if ever they are. We finally got the result we needed and the performance was good, and it had been coming. We had an equally good performance at Walsall a couple of days previous, but unfortunately we didn’t get the result there.

On whether he feels he’s had the impact he would've hoped for…

We really should have had more than that [one win]. We should have at least two more points but the players have responded well, their attitude has been great so we can’t really ask for more than that.

Apart from the display against Wycombe, and we’ve spoken about all the displays that we’ve had from the other three games, I think we've deserved at least what we’ve got from the game and obviously the Walsall game we won but we didn’t win.

On having a big following at Rochdale and part the fans can play again…

The fans have been great. They were great up at Fleetwood and vocal, great up at Walsall and vocal which was really appreciated. They have been terrific at home as well but we really didn’t do them justice in the Wycombe game but I thought they were excellent on Monday as well, and we're going to need that again.

On being superstitious as a manager or not…

Touch wood, no! It drags you into it, I try not to be and I fight myself, but you do end up becoming a bit like that. It does cross my mind and I do think about it. People will come to the game or not come to the game and I'll think, well if they didn't come to the game agaisnt Burton then they can't come to the next game. I do try and fight that thinking and just think I’m going to do what I need to do but it does take you a bit that way of thinking I must be honest.

On what will be the most important factor in getting the three points…

We just have to show a committed and concentrated performance and we need to be completely focused on the job. We’re capable of getting the result and we need to have a big focus and know the job that we need to do, I’m pretty sure that the team from an effort and endeavour perspective feel confident that they will give all of that. We just need to not do anything silly and get our fair share of luck and work hard then we will get something from the game.

On any injury concerns…

We had a couple of players who came in on their day off for a bit of treatment but I’m hoping that’s just precautionary, just to make sure they are 100% OK and nearly all were out there training today [Thursday].
